George Washington is the father of America, he is the first president of USA. So many people admires him, maybe the artist of this art drew this because he admires and loves Washington.
The artist, Gilbert Stuart, "he believed inner character was reflected in a person’s physical features", so with no doubt, we trust that from this post, Washington's physical features must have something different from others.
In the post, we can see that Washington stand in front of a chair. And on this chair you can see the little thing which is medallion. The thing which medallion shows I think is the national flag of America. We can find many details in this post are relating to America.
Okay let's pay our attention back to Washinton. He is in black and usually black means august, I think.“Stuart painted Washington from life, showing him standing up, dressed in a black velvet suit with an outstretched hand held up in an oratorical manner (which could be characterized as "commanding and stern yet open and inclusive").” See, I said that the artist must draw something meaningful. I'm right.
Just post a little bit today.;)
by the way, quotes are from wikipedia.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lansdowne_portrait
Emi,
ReplyDeleteI like what you have written so far, especially about the symbolism of his august gesture. How about some reading on George Washington? Post some biographical information. Look at the Picturing America page on this work.
